I have recently had to send my HP laptop in for repair under warranty. The problem was due to the Wifi Wireless Internet stopping working. It turns out this is a bit of a common problem on the dv6000 series laptops as the following forum (for a slightly different model suggests): dv6140us (dv6000) wireless problem. There are also numerous people on the Internet reporting similar problems.
After initial problems getting through on the phone – HP Laptop Support, Wireless LAN Problem – problems contacting by phone, the repair was quite quick.
First I was given a date by the person over the phone, who said they would book it in for collection on a set date. I told them that the date they provided was inconvenient, but they said that they couldn’t change it, but don’t worry as someone will call you to confirm collection time and you can reschedule it then. Nobody called me and in fact the collection was just arranged with the courier firm Parceline. The first I new about the attempt was when I came home to find a yellow “sorry we missed you” card.
They offered a choose a date redelivery, but there was an upgrade charge if this was required to be specified in morning / afternoon slots, or if it was for a Saturday (cost from £5.88 up to £11.75 depending upon choice).
I rearranged for New Years Eve, when they came and collected the laptop. It was then returned within 2 weeks, although again there was no warning and the same options on redelivery.
The laptop had been fixed (Motherboard replacement), and other than removing my password from my login and enabling “Administrator” as a user there appears to be no changes to the setup or any files.
The laptop is now up and running again.
This prompted me as an appropriate time to switch to Windows XP Professional instead of Windows Vista Home Premium, but that did not go any where near as smoothly. In fact I’m begrudgingly staying with Windows Vista (and Linux) for the time being. More about the problems with Windows XP in a future post.
