Book review – In the Shadow of Suribachi by Joyce Faulkner
I was provided this ebook directly from the author Joyce Faulkner. I had previously attempted to read an earlier book of hers Book Review – Username by Joyce Faulkner (available DRM Free). Unfortunately it was not a book that I was able to finish as I found the book emotionally quite disturbing.
Anyway I left a review of the book and was contacted by the author who provided me a Kindle eBook version of another of her books – In the Shadow of Suribachi.
Unfortunately as an ebook this is only available DRM locked (see Avoid DRM lock-in with ebooks), although username is available DRM free.
In the Shadow of Suribachi – fiction story about the battle at Iwo Jima
Living in the UK I have read / watched / heard of lots about World War 2, but mainly from the perspective of the war in Europe. I knew very little about the war in the Pacific, and at first didn’t even recognise the name of the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. I now know a little more thanks to this book.
Whilst the book is a fictional story, it has clearly been well researched including the author’s father’s own experience during the Battle of Iwo Jima. It is a very good story and has some very vivid descriptions of the battle and those going through it. It also covers the life of some of the characters before and after the war through a number of snapshots into the lives of the people behind the soldier. It took me a little while to get into the book, but once the story turned to the impending battle I became hooked and didn’t want to put the book down.
A great book – well worth reading!
